Zipline and Climbing Centre
In November 2013, DMW Architects received planning approval for ambitious plans for a regional and well-loved landmark.
The project involved the creation of various attractions, including a climbing centre within a locally listed theatre space, a zipline tower, a beach landing stage, a refreshment kiosk, and an artificial surf wave.
One of the notable additions was 'PierZip', the world's first pier to shore zip wire, featuring a 250-metre dual zip wire for thrilling races to the beach.
DMW Architects collaborated with Bulgarian design firm Walltopia.com to finalise the structural designs for the tower element. A galvanised modular steel tower was constructed at the end of the pier, bolted over the existing concrete pier pile ends. Additionally, DMW designed a unique landing stage resembling an 'upturned boat', serving as both an attraction and providing a sloped seating area for the public during its inactive periods.
The newly added tower and facilities offer a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors, attracting a significant number of tourists to Bournemouth Pier. The success of this project showcases the collaborative efforts of DMW Architects working with our client, Walltopia, BCP and other consultants in delivering an innovative and ambitious project that benefits both the local community and visitors alike.
