Modern Barn Conversion in AONB

Set within an expansive estate in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), this project involved the transformation of a redundant barn structure into two bespoke, four-bedroom dwellings.

The barn conversion showcases the power of minimalism and the inherent elegance of utilitarian structures. Marrying the vernacular architecture of Dorset with contemporary sensibilities, the barn is clad black timber, punctuated by a sleek zinc roof – elements that echo the aesthetic of practical agricultural structures to seamlessly blend with the rural surroundings.

Each dwelling houses expansive void spaces in the living rooms, providing an overwhelming sense of space, light, and freedom, harmonising indoor and outdoor living experiences.

Guided by sustainable design principles, this project maximises the existing structure and shell, creating two generously proportioned four-bedroom houses.

A detailed 3D model of the existing structure was instrumental in guiding our design process from the inside out, ensuring that every element of design was considered. Computer-generated imagery was also employed to emphasise the minimal impact our design would impose on the AONB, further supporting our planning submission.
