Listed Building Conversion and Mews Development

Located in Colehill, Wimborne, this project involves the conversion of a Victorian villa into two dwellings alongside the creation of a mews courtyard development to the rear.

A number of significant constraints had to be considered in the design, including conservation considerations, heritage preservation, impact mitigation on surrounding properties, tree constraints and a necessity to protect the site's natural environment.

Our journey began with the sensitive conversion of a grand Victorian villa. Retaining the majority of the original structure, we removed modern extensions at the rear and reintroduced the villa as two four-bed houses, retaining the charm of their Victorian heritage.

In addition, we have introduced a coach house-style dwelling at the entrance in place of an existing bungalow.

The site is then completed with a mews courtyard development to the rear. This unique space, framed by seven new dwellings of varying sizes, evokes the character of traditional Victorian almshouses through a combination of brick banding, soldier courses, and slate-roofed structures.

The scale of the new structures steps down to respond to the existing levels and the smaller scale of adjacent bungalows to the south, effectively reducing impact and seamlessly integrating with the surroundings.

Drawing inspiration from historic Wimborne and Canford Magna structures, our team sought to mirror the Lady Wimborne style of architecture. From the grandeur of detached houses to the cosy intimacy of terraced homes, our design encapsulates Victorian proportions within a conservation area architecture context.

The project's success hinged on our collaborative approach, engaging with local authorities and assembling a dedicated team of specialists: planning consultants, heritage experts, tree consultants, highways consultants, and of course, our valued client Bayview Developments.
